Ideal Weight (Broca Index)

Understanding the Broca formula for estimating ideal body weight.

Broca Index for Ideal Weight

The Broca Index is a simple formula developed by French physician Paul Broca in the 19th century to estimate ideal body weight based on height.

Broca Formula

Ideal Weight (kg) = Height (cm) - 100 (for men)

Ideal Weight (kg) = Height (cm) - 105 (for women)

For individuals over 40 years old, subtract an additional 5-10% from the result.

Example

For a 175 cm tall man: 175 - 100 = 75 kg

For a 165 cm tall woman: 165 - 105 = 60 kg

Limitations

The Broca Index is a very basic formula and doesn't account for factors like body composition, muscle mass, or ethnic differences. It's best used as a rough estimate rather than a precise target.

Modern methods like BMI ranges or body fat percentage are generally more accurate for assessing healthy weight.
