Understanding the Devine formula for estimating ideal body weight.
The Devine formula, developed by Dr. B.J. Devine in 1974, is commonly used in medical settings to estimate ideal body weight for drug dosing calculations.
For men: Ideal Weight (kg) = 50 + 2.3 × (Height (inches) - 60)
For women: Ideal Weight (kg) = 45.5 + 2.3 × (Height (inches) - 60)
Note: Height must be in inches for this formula.
For a 70-inch (178 cm) tall man: 50 + 2.3 × (70 - 60) = 50 + 2.3 × 10 = 73 kg
For a 64-inch (163 cm) tall woman: 45.5 + 2.3 × (64 - 60) = 45.5 + 2.3 × 4 = 54.7 kg
The Devine formula is primarily used for medical purposes, such as calculating appropriate drug dosages. For general health and fitness goals, other methods like BMI or body composition analysis may be more appropriate.
